Question 102: Please explain the prostration of gratitude (sujud al-shukr) after prayer.
Answer
Sujud al-shukr (prostration of gratitude) is one of the important and valuable commands of the Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them). A few examples of its hadiths regarding its importance and manner are presented, and we recommend that all of you follow up on its other narrations in the Shi'a hadith collections:
📚 Uyun Akhbar al-Ridha, Vol. 1, p. 281
Imam Ridha (peace be upon him) said: 'The prostration after the obligatory prayer is gratitude to Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, for what He granted him success to perform the obligation, and the least amount of words that are sufficient in it is to say three times: 'Shukran lillah, shukran lillah, shukran lillah' (Thanks be to Allah, thanks be to Allah, thanks be to Allah).'' He said: 'I said: 'What is the meaning of 'Shukran lillah'?' He said: 'In reality, the servant is saying: 'This prostration of mine is gratitude to Allah for what He granted me success in His service and the performance of His obligation,' and gratitude causes increase. So if there is any shortcoming or deficiency in the prayer that has not been completed by the supererogatory prayers, it is completed by this prostration.'
