Question 795: What should be paid for Zakat al-Fitra?
✅ Answer: Pay attention to the following narrations:
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 78
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Zakat al-Fitra for every people is from that with which they nourish their dependents, whether it be milk, raisins, or otherwise.
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 79
Ibrahim ibn Muhammad says: The narrations regarding Zakat al-Fitra differed, so I wrote to Imam Askari, peace be upon him, asking about it. The Imam wrote: Indeed, Fitra is one sa’ of the sustenance and food of your city!
For the people of Mecca, Yemen, Taif, the outskirts of Sham, Yamama, Bahrain, the two Iraqs (Kufa and Basra), Persia, Ahvaz, and Kerman, it is dates... until he said: And for others, it is whatever is the predominant food and sustenance of their region!
📚 Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 173
Someone says: I said to Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him: May I be your ransom! Is Zakat al-Fitra also obligatory on the Bedouins? The Imam said: Whoever eats a certain food and makes it their primary sustenance, it is upon them to pay Zakat al-Fitra from that same food and sustenance!
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 86
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: Regarding Zakat al-Fitra, there is no issue with giving its monetary value!
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 86
Abdullah ibn Sinan asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about Zakat al-Fitra; the Imam said: Dried dates (tamr) are more beloved to me, for with every dried date, a date palm will be planted for you in Paradise!
📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 85
Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: If I give one sa’ of dried dates for Zakat al-Fitra, it is more beloved to me than giving one sa’ of gold!
✅ The criterion for the type of Zakat al-Fitra in the above narrations is: 'The food and sustenance that a person adopts as their base,'
'That with which a person nourishes their dependents,'
'The food and sustenance of the people of each city,'
and 'The predominant food and sustenance of each city.'
The examples of this criterion have varied across regions and times, and the Ahl al-Bayt, peace be upon them, have specified some examples from their era, though many of these have changed in our time.
In past eras, due to the limited variety of foods and the clear identification of a family’s or city’s staple food, determining the predominant sustenance was easier. Today, with the abundance of blessings in many cities, some ambiguity may arise in determining the predominant sustenance.
Of course, the people of each region must determine and pay their Zakat al-Fitra according to the narrational criteria. However, in many urban areas today, the primary and foundational sustenance of cities has become rice. Although wheat remains an inseparable part of their diet, the predominant food upon which households rely is rice. Coupled with the principle of caution, it is appropriate in regions where rice is the predominant sustenance to give rice.
✅ In narration 4⃣ and others, permission has been granted to convert the type of Zakat al-Fitra into its monetary value, allowing one to pay its price instead.
