✅Answer: Please pay attention to the following narrations:

📚 Amali al-Mufid, p. 166

Abu Hamza said: I heard Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, say: There are four things that, if a person has them, his Islam is complete, his faith is strengthened, his sins are cleansed from him, and he will meet his Lord while He is pleased with him. And if he has sins from head to toe, Allah will wash them away from him. And they are: Fulfillment of what he has promised Allah upon himself... to the end of the hadith.

📚 Nawadir Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Isa, p. 173

Imam Jawad, peace be upon him, was asked about a person who makes a covenant with Allah near the Black Stone that he will never approach a forbidden act again, but when he returns, he returns to that forbidden act. He said: He should free a slave, or fast, or feed 60 needy people. And what he has abandoned from that act is greater, and he should seek forgiveness from Allah and repent!

📚 Al-Tahdheeb, Vol. 8, p. 309

Ali ibn Ja'far said: I asked Musa ibn Ja'far, peace be upon him, about a person who makes a covenant with Allah regarding something that is not a sin. What is required of him if he does not fulfill his promise? He said: He frees a slave or gives charity (the amount of which was mentioned in the previous hadith) or fasts for two consecutive months!

📚 Al-Tahdheeb, Vol. 8, p. 315

Imam Baqir or Imam Sadiq, peace be upon them, said: A person who makes a divine covenant and a promise with Allah regarding an act of obedience to Allah and does not fulfill it, then he must free a slave or fast for two consecutive months or feed 60 needy people!

📚 Al-Tahdheeb, Vol. 8, p. 314

Abd al-Malik said: Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, said: A person who promises Allah upon himself not to commit a forbidden act that he names, then commits it, he said: I do not know, except that he said: He must free a slave or fast for two months or feed 60 needy people!

📚 Tafsir al-Ayyashi, 1-289

Ibn Sinan said: I asked Imam Sadiq, peace be upon him, about the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, (in Surah Al-Ma'idah, verse 1) where He says: 'O you who have believed, fulfill your covenants.' The Imam said: It means the promises.

✅It is clear from the above narrations and others that if a person makes a covenant and a promise with Allah that he will no longer commit a sin, or makes a covenant with Allah regarding something that is not a sin, or makes a promise regarding an act of obedience to Allah, he must fulfill his promise. In case of breaking the covenant, for its expiation, he has the choice between freeing a slave, or fasting for two consecutive months, or feeding 60 needy people. And, of course, he must also repent and seek forgiveness for the sin of breaking his promise.
