Question 84: Is it permissible to prostrate on modern paper?
✅ Answer: There are several hadiths regarding the permissibility of prostrating on paper that existed during the time of Ahlul Bayt (AS).
Among them:
📚 *Man La Yahduruhu al-Faqih*, Vol. 1, p. 270
Translation: Dawood ibn Abi Zayd asked Imam Ali Naqi (AS) about prostrating on parchment and written paper, and whether it is permissible. The Imam wrote in reply: It is permissible.
Important Note: The key issue is that the materials used to make paper today are different from those of the past. Unless it is proven that the material is one that Ahlul Bayt (AS) deemed permissible for prostration, it cannot be used for prostration. For example, Ahlul Bayt (AS) deemed it permissible to prostrate on a ‘khamrah’ (small prayer mat), but those mats were made from palm tree branches. As for modern prayer rugs made from synthetic or petroleum-based materials, prostrating on them is definitely not permissible. Therefore, the fact that the name of paper from the past is the same as the paper used today does not equate their rulings. The materials must be similar in nature for the ruling to be the same.
