1 عَنْ حَمَّادِ بْنِ عُثْمَانَ عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّه قَالَ: تَرْكُ التِّجَارَةِ يَنْقُصُ الْعَقْلَ.

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Abandoning trade diminishes the intellect!

2 عَنِ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: قَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ أَيَّ شَيْ ءٍ تُعَالِجُ فَقُلْتُ مَا أُعَالِجُ الْيَوْمَ شَيْئاً فَقَالَ كَذَلِكَ تَذْهَبُ أَمْوَالُكُمْ وَ اشْتَدَّ عَلَيْهِ.

Fudayl said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: What are you doing? I said: I am not doing anything now! The Imam said: In this way your wealth is being wasted! And this matter was difficult for the Imam!

3 عَنْ فُضَيْلٍ الْأَعْوَرِ قَالَ: شَهِدْتُ مُعَاذَ بْنَ كَثِيرٍ وَ قَالَ لِأَبِي عَبْداللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ أَيْسَرْتُ فَأَدَعُ التِّجَارَةَ فَقَالَ إِنَّكَ إِنْ فَعَلْتَ قَلَّ عَقْلُكَ أَوْ نَحْوَهُ

Fudayl said: I was present when Mu'adh said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): Indeed, I have become wealthy, should I abandon trade and business? The Imam said: If you do that, your intellect will diminish! Or he said a sentence similar to this!

4 عَنْ مُعَاذٍ بَيَّاعِ الْأَكْسِيَةِ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ يَا مُعَاذُ أَ ضَعُفْتَ عَنِ التِّجَارَةِ أَوْ زَهِدْتَ فِيهَا قُلْتُ مَا ضَعُفْتُ عَنْهَا وَ لَا زَهِدْتُ فِيهَا قَالَ فَمَا لَكَ قُلْتُ كُنَّا نَنْتَظِرُ أَمْراً وَ ذَلِكَ حِينَ قُتِلَ الْوَلِيدُ وَ عِنْدِي مَالٌ كَثِيرٌ وَ هُوَ فِي يَدِي وَ لَيْسَ لِأَحَدٍ عَلَيَّ شَيْ ءٌ وَ لَا أَرَانِي آكُلُهُ حَتَّى أَمُوتَ فَقَالَ لَا تَتْرُكْهَا فَإِنَّ تَرْكَهَا مَذْهَبَةٌ لِلْعَقْلِ اسْعَ عَلَى عِيَالِكَ وَ إِيَّاكَ أَنْ يَكُونُوا هُمُ السُّعَاةَ عَلَيْكَ.

📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 148

Mu'adh 'the cloth merchant' said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to me: O Mu'adh! Have you become unable to trade or have you become uninterested in it? He said: I have not become unable to do it, nor am I uninterested in it!

The Imam said: Then what is the matter with you?!

He said: We are waiting for a matter, and this was at a time when Walid had been killed, and I have a lot of wealth in my hand, and no one is owed anything by me, and I don't think I can consume this wealth until I die!

The Imam said: Do not abandon trade and business, for abandoning it is a destroyer of the intellect. Strive for your family, and do not let them be the ones striving for you!

5 عَنْ شِهَابِ بْنِ عَبْدِ رَبِّهِ قَالَ: قَالَ لِي أَبُو عَبْداللَّهِ إِنْ ظَنَنْتَ أَوْ بَلَغَكَ أَنَّ هَذَا الْأَمْرَ كَائِنٌ فِي غَدٍ فَلَا تَدَعَنَّ طَلَبَ الرِّزْقِ وَ إِنِ اسْتَطَعْتَ أَنْ لَا تَكُونَ كَلًّا فَافْعَلْ.

Shahab said: Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said to me: If you think or it is reported to you that this matter (the reappearance) will happen tomorrow, then never abandon seeking a livelihood, and if you can, do this so that you are not a burden on others!

6 عَنْ أَسْبَاطِ بْنِ سَالِمٍ قَالَ: دَخَلْتُ عَلَى أَبِي عَبْدِ اللَّهِ فَسَأَلَنَا عَنْ عُمَرَ بْنِ مُسْلِمٍ- مَا فَعَلَ فَقُلْتُ صَالِحٌ وَ لَكِنَّهُ قَدْ تَرَكَ التِّجَارَةَ فَقَالَ أَبُو عَبْدِ اللَّهِ عَمَلُ الشَّيْطَانِ ثَلَاثاً

Asbat said: I entered upon Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him), and he asked us about Omar ibn Muslim, what he was doing (how he was)? I said: He is good and righteous, but he has abandoned trade!

So Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said three times: The work of Satan, the work of Satan, the work of Satan!

(Meaning abandoning business is the work of Satan)!

7 عَنِ الْفُضَيْلِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ قَالَ: قُلْتُ لِأَبِي عَبْداللَّه إِنِّي قَدْ تَرَكْتُ التِّجَارَةَ قَالَ فَلَا تَفْعَلْ افْتَحْ بَابَكَ وَ ابْسُطْ بِسَاطَكَ وَ اسْتَرْزِقِ اللَّهَ رَبَّكَ.

📚Al-Faqih, Vol. 3, p. 165

Fudayl said: I said to Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him): I have abandoned trade! So the Imam said: Do not do that, open your door and spread your goods and seek a livelihood from your Lord!

✅In the narrations, the abandonment of business is severely condemned, and even the excuse of being wealthy and self-sufficient and the excuse of the potential nearness of the reappearance of the Master (peace be upon him) have been rejected in this regard, and it has been commanded to be diligent in seeking a livelihood in all circumstances.

اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَی مُحَمَّدٍ وَ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ

وَ عَجِّلْ لِوَلِیِّکَ الْفَرَجَ وَ الْعَافِیَةَ وَ النَّصْرَ
