📚 Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 280
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said about someone who is making up a fast for the month of Ramadan: He has the choice until the sun passes its zenith (i.e., the beginning of midday), and if it is a supererogatory fast, he has the choice until night!
📚 Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 187
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said about the saying that a fasting person has the choice until noon: This is concerning an obligatory fast, but regarding a supererogatory fast, he can break his fast whenever he wants until sunset!
📚 Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 278
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said: Regarding a supererogatory fast, you have the right to break your fast whenever you want until night. And you can break a missed obligatory fast until the sun passes its zenith, and once the sun has passed its zenith, you do not have the right to break your fast!
📚 Al-Tahdhib, vol. 4, p. 280
Imam al-Sadiq (peace be upon him) said about someone who is making up a fast for the month of Ramadan: He has the choice to break his fast until noon, and regarding a supererogatory fast, until sunset!
Imam al-Baqir (peace be upon him) said about a man who has sexual intercourse with his wife on a day he is making up a fast for the month of Ramadan: If he has intercourse before the sun passes its zenith, there is nothing upon him except one day in place of this day. But if he has intercourse after the sun passes its zenith, it is upon him to give charity of one mudd to ten poor people for each poor person, and if he is not able to, it is upon him to make up this day and fast for three days as an expiation for what he has done!
Choice to break a missed obligatory fast
Choice to break a supererogatory fast
✅It is clear from the above narrations that if someone has taken a supererogatory fast, he can break his fast whenever he wants until sunset, and there is nothing upon him.
However, a person who is making up a missed fast for the month of Ramadan only has the choice to break his fast until noon. And if he breaks his fast after the sun passes its zenith, in addition to having to make it up on another day, he must give charity of one mudd to ten poor people. And if he is not able to do this, he must fast for three days as an expiation for what he has done.
