Question 73: Can I work on the nights of Tasu'a and Ashura, or is it problematic? If I don't go to work, it is fine, but I really need the money.
✅Answer:
Regarding the prohibition of seeking worldly affairs on certain days, we present the following narrations for you to reflect on and derive your conclusion, InshaAllah.
📚Amali Sheikh Saduq, p. 129
Translation:
Imam Reza (AS) said: 'Whoever refrains from seeking his worldly needs and work on the day of Ashura, Allah will fulfill his needs in this world and the Hereafter. Whoever makes Ashura a day of grief, sorrow, and tears, Allah will make the Day of Judgment a day of joy and happiness for him, and his eyes will be delighted with us in Paradise. But whoever calls Ashura a day of blessing and stores something for his household on this day, there will be no blessing in what he has stored, and on the Day of Judgment, he will be gathered in the lowest level of Hell with Yazid, Ubaydullah ibn Ziyad, and Umar ibn Sa'd (may Allah curse them all).'
📚Kamil al-Ziyarat, p. 175
Translation:
Imam Baqir (AS) said in a narration: 'If you can avoid seeking your work and needs on the day of Ashura, then do so, for it is an ominous and inauspicious day, and a believer’s need is not fulfilled on this day. Even if it is fulfilled, it will have no blessing, growth, or increase. No one should store anything for their household on this day, for if they do, there will be no blessing in it, nor in their family (wife and children).'
✅Thus, by refraining from work and making Ashura a day of mourning, crying, and grief, one fulfills their religious duty, InshaAllah.
✅Note:
Regarding working throughout the night to earn a livelihood, consider the following two narrations:
📚Al-Kafi, Vol. 5, p. 127
Translation:
Imam Sadiq (AS) said: 'If craftsmen stay awake the entire night (for work), their earnings are illicit and forbidden.'
