Answer

✅Answer: In Surah Maryam, verse 26, Allah, the Mighty and Exalted, addresses Mary (peace be upon her) and says:

'So eat and drink and be comforted. And if you see any human being, say: 'Indeed, I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious, so I will not speak to any human today.''

✅The vow of silence mentioned in the above verse consisted of completely refraining from speaking during the day, which was permissible during the time of Mary (peace be upon her).

However, in the religion of Islam, there is no place for it and it has been declared forbidden:

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 172

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'There is no fasting of silence from day until night!'

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 2, p. 77

Imam Sajjad (peace be upon him) said in a hadith: 'The fast of silence is forbidden!'

📚 Al-Faqih, Vol. 4, p. 367

Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) narrated from his forefathers about the will of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) to the Commander of the Faithful (peace be upon him) that he said: 'And there is no fasting of silence from day until night (meaning it is not permissible)... up to the point where he said: 'And the fast of silence is forbidden!'

📚 Ma'ani al-Akhbar, p. 173, hadith 1

Ali (peace be upon him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: 'In my Ummah, there is no monasticism (staying in a monastery and separating from the world for worship, like Christian monks) and no wandering (i.e., traveling on earth for worship and monasticism) and no 'zamm' (i.e., silence)!'

📚 Tahdhib, Vol. 4, p. 153

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said: 'The month of Ramadan has abrogated every other fast!'

✅ The prohibition of the fast of silence is clear in the Shi'a narrations, and according to narration 5, with the coming of the fast of the month of Ramadan, the fasts that were in the previous nations have been lifted, and what has been recommended in the religion of Islam is guarding the tongue from frivolity and various sins of the tongue. Please pay attention to one of these narrations:

📚 Al-Kafi, Vol. 4, p. 89

Abu Basir said: I heard Imam Sadiq (peace be upon him) say: 'Indeed, fasting is not only from eating and drinking. Indeed, Mary (peace be upon her) said: 'I have vowed a fast to the Most Gracious,' and she meant silence, so (during fasting) guard your tongues and lower your eyes (from what is forbidden) and do not quarrel or argue with each other and do not envy one another, for indeed envy consumes faith just as fire consumes wood!'
